Adoption Process/Application
Â
Â
After careful consideration of what responsible pet ownership entails you have decided you are ready to adopt.
Â
What are your next steps?
Â
Your first step should be to visit our facility on 165 Hilton Road, or a satellite adoption center located at Animal Essentials, Petsmart, and Douglas Animal Hospital.

When you arrive at the Fredericton SPCA you will invited to "Meet your Match" and complete the ASPCA Meet Your Match adopter survey. This will form the basis of your adoption conversation and application. At all facilities the survey should be completed by the adoptee who must be at least 19 years of age and have appropriate identification such as a drivers licence.
Â
Once you know which Meet Your Match 'colour' you are, you will be able to  view our animalswith the knowledge of who your best match could be.
Â
You meet your match(s) in our adoption room and once you decide who you would like to adopt you will submit your completed adoption survey for review by a person sanctioned by the Fredericton SPCA to review your application. Adoption applications are reviewed 'on the spot'. Generally a decision is made at that time, however occaisionally an application may be deferred to the Shelter Coordinator for a final decision.
Â
- If you have a dog in your household your dog and the potential adoptive dog will need to meet at our facility to determine that they will get along.
Â
- The animal being adopted must be for the adoptee's household, and not be a gift to another household. All members of the household must meet the animal prior to an adoption being finalized.
Â
- If the adoptee lives in rental accommodation, they must have permission from their landlord to adopt from the Fredericton SPCA. A staff member communicating directly with the landlord or reading the terms of the tenant's rental agreement will verify this permission. It is the renters responsibility to ascertain that they do indeed have permission to have an animal in their rental situation prior to adopting.
Â
- Please note the Fredericton SPCA reserves the right to refuse an adoption for any reason.
Â
You're approved! What now?
Â
If you are adopting a cat or kitten that is pre-spayed or neutered you will be able to take him or her home that day. If the cat or kitten is not yet spayed or neutered you will need to wait until he or she is. Thanks to wonderful partnerships with vets in our community a surgery date is usually set for within a few days of your adoption, occasionally around holidays and busy times of the year it can take a little longer to get surgical space. Generally your cat or kitten will come home to you the day after his or her surgery.
Â
If you are adopting a dog that is pre-spayed or neutered your dog will come home to you the next day. All dog adoptions have a minimum 24 hour wait period. This gives you the opportunity to get your home ready for your new arrival. If the dog is not pre-spayed or neutered you will have to wait until your dog has his or her surgery to take him or her home. Generally your dog will come home to you the day after his or her surgery.
Â
On the day you collect your pet to bring him or her home you will sign an adoption contract. This contract outlines your, and our, responsibilities towards that pet. You will also be given a copy of your pets health history while at our facility, and information on your pets microchip.
Â
CONGRATULATIONS your adoption is complete. We wish you a lifetime of joy and happiness with your new forever furry friend.
Â
Additional information:
