Humane Education
"Children trained to extend justice, kindness
and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relations with one another."
-US National PTA Congress, 1933
WHAT IS HUMANE EDUCATION?
Humane education teaches kindness, empathy, compassion and respect for all living beings. Lesson plans provide knowledge about animals and animal welfare issues and inspire action to prevent animal suffering. As experts have recognized the link between child abuse, animal abuse and violence against people, the value of humane education in schools is greater than ever.
Humane education includes 4 elements
- Providing accurate information about the issues of our time so that people have the information they need to understand the consequences of their decisions as citizens.
- Fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking, so that people can evaluate information and solve problems.
- Instilling reverence, respect, and responsibility, so that people have the motivation to face challenges and to act with integrity.
- Offering positive choices that benefit oneself, other people, the animals, and the Earth, so that people are empowered to create a more humane world.
OUR HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAMS:
The purpose of the Fredericton SPCA's humane education programs is to be proactive and help prevent further abuse, neglect and abandonment of non-human animals through programming that informs and instills empathy, compassion and responsibility for all living beings.
We offer informative and interactive presentations and shelter tours, and information booths during community events. We are also available to provide support to teachers and parents.
